We are in the middle of the health and fitness era. Everybody everywhere wants to be fit, stay healthy, look and feel younger and have greater longevity. Look around you and it seems everyone everywhere is talking about herbs and exercises you’ve never heard of before. Chances are, you probably can’t even pronounce them. Moringa olie…what?
As we see big restaurants and fast food chains now featuring “healthier choices” you can’t help but wonder, there must be some validity to all this. This health craze doesn’t look like it’s going away anytime soon. In fact, it’s getting bigger and stronger. So what’s the big deal? Why are health stores popping up on all street corners and what’s with all the supplements? The more important question perhaps would be what do I need to know about supplements that everybody else already knows?
1. You don’t get all the nutrients you need
Our food has been processed, it’s getting faster and cheaper. The fact is, the quality of 50+ years ago simply doesn’t exist anymore. Eating a bunch of broccoli isn’t what it used to be. Most of the nutrients that should be found get boiled away or are grown in questionable soil. Supplements contain pure ingredients. And most every nutrient you need.
2. We all need a little boost
You try to eat as healthy as you possibly can but every now and then you miss. It was a busy and stressful day and you found yourself at the coffee shop more than you should have been, eating a muffin. Not the best choice. Sure it had fruit in it, but it hardly accounts for the daily serving that is required to maintain optimal health. Supplements will take care of that extra dose you missed out.
3. Some foods you just can’t eat
Whether it be allergies, (and yes, you can get new allergies as you grow older) or a slight sensitivity to certain foods that should be good for you, whatever the case may be, chances are you are missing out on something. Our foods aren’t as pure as they used to be so eating them only causes irritation. But you still need that mineral or vitamin. Supplements come in handy here to take as they will provide you with what you need for great health.
4. Changes in our health or age
Whether it be an illness a fall or simply aging, there may come a time when your body will require more than what you are giving it. If you are ill or under the weather, chances are your appetite is low as well. Your supplement will keep your body supplied with all the nutrients it needs.
5. Work out boosters
For those hard core people who love to work out 5-6 days a week and are perhaps training for a competition or marathon, supplements are going to be your go to jewels to help keep you strong, build up your muscles, help with endurance and any extra kicks your body will require as you are growing. Eating plenty of chicken, fish and vegetables are great but your body definitely needs more than these foods will provide for you.
Obviously eating healthy and exercising regularly are best defenses to keeping optimal health but sometimes it’s just not enough. Supplements are no longer the evil they were when they first burst on the scene some 20 or 30 years ago. It’s time to revisit the health store. Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or health care professional to see which ones might be right for you.
