You’ve heard it before. Happiness is an inside job. Still we have a hard time wrapping our head around this fact and, it is, a fact. You cannot and will not get happiness from another person or things. You can shop til you drop if you think this will make you happy and it will, temporarily. What happens when that stunning dress/suit you just bought is now one month old and not so fabulous anymore? You could always go buy another item and just keep filling your closet with new things or you could start making some internal changes. Yes, happiness is an inside job.
So how do we achieve this eternal happiness if it doesn’t come from a store or a person? Life style changes. It’s the things you do day in and day out that will aid in your quest for the happiness you desperately seek. I’ve listed 10 simple things that you can apply immediately that will bring great results, some almost instantly.
1. Positive self-talk.
Yes, start talking to yourself. Do it daily, hourly even, just do it. But make sure it is positive. Tell yourself how awesome you are. Look in the mirror (which makes this exercise way more fun) and keep telling yourself how beautiful you are and how amazing life is. Do this lots. This will be a little hard to do at first, but like anything, with practice, you will be a pro at it in no time. And the results? Amazing.
2. Practice gratitude.
Be thankful for you. Give gratitude for all the amazing gifts you have and all the wonderful traits you have. Even be thankful for your little idiosyncrasies, all the little things that make you YOU. Be grateful for all the things in your life, the good, the bad and the ugly. Everything.
3. Remove toxic people from your life.
This is kind of hard to do as a lot of the toxic people in our lives just so happen to be family. It’s time though. You know how you feel when you spend time with them. Downright miserable and their negativity rubs off on you. Limit your time with them. Walk away if you have to. Let them know you don’t want to talk about negative stuff today. Do whatever you have to, but shield yourself from the toxicity. You will feel much better at the end of the day for it and you will see how much happier you will be.
At the start or end of each day write out all the things you have to be grateful and happy for. People, little serendipities that happened to you recently or just life in general. Do this daily. Take time to think about all the great things in your life and write them out. At the end of each point, write Thank You. As you think about them and write them out your mood will instantly shift. This is a great and easy exercise.
5. Smile more
When you are doing your daily chores, when you are out for a walk with the dog, when you are on your way to work, even smile at strangers. Just smile. Lots more. The more you smile, the happier you will feel. It takes just as much effort to smile as it does to frown. Choose smiling, always.
6. Exercise and diet
I don’t mean go on a diet, I mean have a look at what you are eating and maybe change it up a bit. If you are eating heavy grease laden food, you will feel like crap. Period. If you eat healthier foods, you will have more energy and in turn make you cheerier. Exercise has already been proven to affect our moods. The more exercise we get in to our lives, the better we feel. Aim for 3 walks a week, or 3 workouts (gym or at home) and increase as you see fit (pardon the pun). You will notice the difference within a week.
Start forgiving those that have hurt or pissed you off. Forgiveness is not an easy thing for many of us but carrying around that grudge isn’t good for us either. It’s time to let it go. It’s time to release all the anger and hurt, forgive and move on. This is not an easy thing to do so start with one person and go forward from there. You don’t have to forgive them in person unless you want to. You can write a forgiveness letter and then burn it. whatever method you decide upon, just make sure you do it. The relief you will feel will instantly boost your mood.
8. Pass the herbs please
Health food stores have popped up on just about every street corner lately and for good reason. They contain magic potions, teas and tinctures to fix just about any ailment you may be suffering from. The easiest and most natural way to boost your mood is by drinking herbal tea. You might want to start adding a cup or two to your daily diet. Green Tea, Rooibos, Lavender and Ginger are just a few super ones. The clerk at the health food store will be able to help you pick out a good one.
You can try them all or one at a time but you must start. Remember happiness comes from within you so if you are ready to achieve great joy, then these simple exercises will certainly help you on your path to eternal happiness.
